Ashish Nehra’s impressive coaching record with the Gujarat Titans has sparked discussions about his potential future with the Indian cricket team. Although Gujarat Titans fell short in the IPL 2026 final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Nehra’s success as head coach continues to attract attention.
Since taking charge ahead of the IPL 2022 season, Nehra has transformed Gujarat Titans into one of the league’s most consistent teams. Under his guidance, the franchise has won one IPL title, reached two finals, and qualified for the playoffs in four of the last five seasons.
Former India cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar believes Nehra’s achievements make him a strong candidate for India’s future white-ball coaching role. While current head coach Gautam Gambhir remains under contract until the 2027 ODI World Cup, Manjrekar feels Nehra should be considered whenever the BCCI looks for a new T20I coach.
According to Manjrekar, Nehra’s practical approach, sharp understanding of the game, and ability to identify solutions without unnecessary complications make him an ideal leader. He also praised Nehra for staying grounded despite his success and focusing entirely on the team’s performance rather than personal recognition.

Manjrekar further stated that if Nehra joins the Indian setup in the future, it should be as the head coach rather than in a specialist role such as bowling coach or consultant. He believes Nehra has already demonstrated his ability to manage an entire team successfully and deserves consideration for the top coaching position.
For now, there is no indication that a coaching change is imminent, but Nehra’s continued success in the IPL is strengthening his case as a potential future coach of India’s T20I side.
