Kentucky Derby live results Kentucky Derby pre-race results Kentucky Derby post time How to watch Kentucky Derby “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports” returned for the 152nd edition at this year’s Kentucky Derby, and it definitely did not disappoint with large-underdog Golden Tempo winning.
Cherie DeVaux made history to become the first trainer to win a Kentucky Derby with her 36-1 underdog Golden Tempo. Golden Tempo was behind for much of the race, but used a late surge to push ahead when it mattered most. At one point, Golden Tempo was in last-place of the race. 5-1 favorite Renegade, owned by St. John’s basketball benefactor and New York business entrepreneur Mike Repole, finished second, with 50-1 Ocelli rounding out the top three.
This win was jockey Jose Ortiz’s first, after finishing in second at the 2018 Kentucky Derby with Good Magic. His older brother, Irad, was Renegade’s jockey as well. Irad’s best finish was 4th place in 2019 on the back of Improbable.
For Golden Tempo, the question of the Triple Crown now looms for the ensuing weeks. It remains to be seen if owner Daisy Phipps Pulito’s horse will compete in the Preakness Stakes after Saturday’s race, but Golden Tempo would most likely be among the favorites to win at Laurel Park.
The Sporting News tracked all live race updates, highlights, and results from Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.
