Munhumutapa Day: Govt Spokesperson Nick Mangwana Clears the Air on New Public Holiday in 2025
Nick Mangwana, Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, has addressed recent speculation about a new holiday called Munhumutapa Day, set to begin in 2025.
A photo circulating online suggested that Munhumutapa Day would be celebrated on September 15, coinciding with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s birthday. This raised questions among social media users about the significance of the proposed holiday.

In response to the inquiries on X (formerly Twitter), Mangwana took to his verified account to clarify that no new public holiday has been added to the 2025 calendar. He emphasized that, contrary to reports from the state-owned publication The Herald, the government has not officially recognized Munhumutapa Day under the Public Holidays and Prohibition of Business Act {Chapter 10:21}.
“No. Govt has NOT gazetted Munhumutapa Day as a Public Holiday,” Mangwana said.
