India’s famous and veteran singer Suman Kalyanpur passed away on Sunday evening. He breathed his last at the age of 89. The news of his demise has sent a wave of mourning across the country and the music world. Veterans from Bollywood to politics are mourning his demise.
Suman Kalyanpur had lent her voice to many superhit songs like ‘Na Na Karte’, ‘Aajkal Tere Mere Pyar Ke Charche’ and ‘Tumne Pukara’. One of her close friends said that she died at her home on Sunday evening due to problems related to old age.
Suman Kalyanpuri was born on 28 January 1937 in Bhawanipur, undivided India (now Bangladesh). Suman Kalyanpur sang more than 800 film songs in his career.

Songs sung in many languages, awarded ‘Padma Bhushan’
Apart from Hindi, Marathi, Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada, Maithili, Bhojpuri, Rajasthani, Bengali, Odia and Punjabi, Suman also recorded songs for films in many languages. His contribution to the world of music deserves the country’s highest honours. He was also awarded the ‘Padma Bhushan’ award.
Some of the most memorable songs of Suman Kalyanpur include ‘Bujha diye hain khud apne haathon’ (film- Shagun), ‘Jo hum pe gujarti hai’ (film- Mohabbat isko kehte hain), and the title song of the film ‘Dil Ek Mandir Hai’ (1963). Apart from this, he sang many superhit songs like ‘Na Na Karte Pyaar Tumheen Se’ (film- Jab Jab Phool Khile, 1965) and ‘Mere Mehboob Na Ja’ (film- Noor Mahal, 1965).

Her song ‘Behna Ne Bhai Ki Kalai’ sung for the film ‘Resham Ki Dori’ in 1974 became very popular, for which she was also nominated for the ‘Filmfare Best Female Playback Singer’ award in 1975.
