Vietnam Airlines plane damaged as tail hits runway during terrifying takeoff

Shocking footage has emerged of failed Vietnam Airlines flight VN34 on Saturday.

The Boeing 787 was taking off from Munich in Germany when a serious issue appeared to occur on the runway at 1.35pm.

The plane pulled skyward in a huge plume of dust after taking up almost the entire runway, footage shows.

In the moment before lifting off, the tail of the aircraft appeared to strike the runway.

The plane bound for Hanoi circled about 9000ft above Munich for some time, and emerging footage appears to show the aircraft dumping fuel before it landed back at Munich International Airport, according to Flightradar24.

The plane was emitting smoke and its tyres appeared to be ripping apart in footage of the landing.

Aircraft engineer Fahad Naim shared photos of damage to the aircraft and said he suspects a brake seizure or internal fault, but said that it is too early for the exact issue behind the incident to be confirmed.

There were no reported injuries and all passengers are now being accommodated by the airline, as an official investigation into the incident and damage to the plane continues, authorities told InsideFlyer.

7NEWS.com.au has contacted Vietnam Airlines for comment.
